Zbigniew Warpechowski

Born in 1938 in Volhynia. Polish artist, poet and performance artist. One of the co-founders of The Black Market – an international performance art pioneers group. He was the organizer of the Poetic Realities Symposium dedicated to the poetic roots of the action art (Adina Bar-On, Phillipe Castellin, Eugenio Miccini, Ewa Zarzycka). In his works Warpechowski puts much stress on the concept of process, interactive form and using body as a medium. Recently he’s been calling himself “a conservative of the avant-garde” (a term first used by Kazimierz Piotrowski in relation to Warpechowski) and in his performances he’s very critical towards contemporary consumerism, media dominance, post-modernism and social liberalism. In 2009 Warpechowski was awarded Gloria Artis golden medal for distinguished contributors to Polish cilture.
