CONTEXTS, the 4th International Sokolovsko Festival of Ephemeral Art gathers people who treasure art that leaves no permanent physical traces, happen in a given moment and place, and then continue to live their own life in the souls of those, who experienced them.

The festival provides a platform for presenting various manifestations of ephemeral art  – performances, installations, “in between” realizations, sound pieces, multimedia works, screenings and talks. CONTEXTS focus on delivering an artistic message to the local community through works realized in public space, naturally accessible to the inhabitants of Sokolovsko, brought to their houses and workshops for children and adults. The festival features documentation of art projects and art places. The debate is around the theme of space in which art takes place: inner space of an artist, art museums and galleries, public space.

Each edition of CONTEXTS honours a distinguished Polish artist. In the past these were: Jan Świdziński, Zbigniew Warpechowski and Jerzy Bereś. This time it is Zygmunt Rytka. Bożenna Biskupska curates a retrospective exhibition of his photographs, installations and videos.

Installations : Bettina Bereś and Jerzy Hanusek reconstruct Maria Pinińska-Bereś’ An Observation Point of Changes in Art. Joanna Rajkowska intervenes with the architecture of the Foundation premises. Multimedia installations by Peter Shelton, Joanna Krzysztoń and Grzegorz Rogala, Haikuinstallation by Koji Kamoji are on view in various locations.

Sound section features concerts/performances by Wojciech Bąkowski, Smutne kobiety and composition by Tomasz Stankiewicz, also PROJEKT KR 736EJ  Bus-Studio of Piotr Lutyński, whose origins go back to the tradition of travelling theatre, cinema, music combined with Kurt Schwitters’ Merz Bau. The bus interacts with the audience leading them to the realm of utopia.

This edition initiates cooperation with Performance Art Bergen. A group of Norwegian performance artists including Rita Marhaug, Robert Alda, Benedicte Clementsen, Teresa Longua present their work in Sokolovsko, and in August a group of Polish artists will take part in the festival Between the Sea and the Sky in Herdla. It is the first stage of a long-term project.

From July 21th to 25th Adina Bar-On, Laurel Carpenter, Terese Longva, Idit Porat and Alastair MacLennan run performance workshops the outcome of which is presented on the last day of the festival.
